A transparent measure of research contribution.
CISBM ranks active members with a single, openly described score built only from verified information. It recognises sustained scientific work and is recalculated whenever records are verified.

How the score is calculated
The score adds five components. Records verified by CISBM administrators count towards it, and the weights are set by the organization and applied equally to every member.
01
Verified publications
Each publication verified by CISBM administrators adds points. Publications affiliated with CISBM weigh more, and sole, first, last, or corresponding authorship carries a multiplier.
02
Citations
Citations of verified publications add a small number of points, up to a fixed cap, so the score stays balanced across a member’s whole body of work.
03
Affiliation
A tier from 0 to 5 on the member’s primary verified institution, read from the Times Higher Education world table rather than set by opinion. The bands are below.
04
Degree
The highest academic degree held, from bachelor’s level to doctoral, postdoctoral, and professorial appointments.
05
Research experience
Years since the first verified research activity: the earliest verified publication, or a start year verified by administrators. Capped after a number of years.
Which rank is which tier
An institution's place in the Times Higher Education world table decides the tier, and the tier is the same for every member who holds that affiliation. A tier counts only once the affiliation itself has been verified.
Tier 5Ranked 1 to 25
The handful at the top of the world table.
Tier 4Ranked 26 to 100
Tier 3Ranked 101 to 300
Tier 2Ranked 301 to 600
Tier 1Ranked 601 to 1200
Tier 0Beyond 1200, or unranked
It adds nothing to the score and takes nothing away.
Where an institution is not in the table the Centre holds, the affiliation keeps whatever tier it already had and an administrator may set one by hand, which is recorded as having been set by hand.
